Explosive WINDIES rewards Williams’ career-best

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WINDIES followed up a career-best spell from Kesrick Williams with dynamic batting to seal a seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the rain-affected first iPay One-day International powered by Minister co-sponsored by Marcel today here.

Andre Russell, batting at three, struck three fours and three sixes in the top score of 35 not out from 21 balls and Marlon Samuels made 26 from 13 balls, as the WINDIES successfully chased a revised target of 91 from 11 overs after rain delayed the start to their innings in the contest played under the lights at Warner Park in the St. Kitts capital.

Rovman Powell, not out on 15, formalised the result with 11 balls remaining, when he lofted a delivery from Bangladeshi captain and left-arm spinner Shakib-Al-Hasan over long-on for six to give WINDIES a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The final two matches will be contested on Saturday and Sunday at the Central Broward Regional Park in the city of Fort Lauderdale in the American state of Florida.

Earlier, Williams had grabbed 4-28 from four overs, as the visitors were restricted to 143 for nine from their allocation of 20 overs.

Off-spinner Ashley Nurse bagged 2-6 from the first over of the match and Keemo Paul collected 2-24 from four overs, as Bangladesh kept bleeding wickets, though Mahmudullah led the way with 35 and Liton Das scored 24.

In pursuit of the new target, WINDIES lost Evin Lewis caught at cover by Liton Das off Mustafizur Rahman for two, slicing a drive (10-1, 1.2 overs).

Andre Fletcher was caught behind by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim off Mustafizur for seven, top-edging a cut (10-2, 1.6 overs).

And, Marlon Samuels was caught at long-on by Mahmudullah off Rubel Hossain for 26, mistiming a lofted drive (52-3, 6.4 overs).

Bangladesh had lost Tamim Iqbal stumped by Denesh Ramdin off Nurse for a first-ball duck, charging down the pitch and missing a wild swing (0-1, 0.1 overs).

Soumya Sarkar was bowled by Nurse for a one-ball duck, playing back and across to a well-pitched delivery (5-2, 0.4 overs).

Liton Das was caught at deep mid-wicket by Andre Fletcher off Keemo Paul for 24, miscuing a pull at a short, rising ball (43-3, 5.2 overs).

Shakib-Al-Hasan was caught at third man by Kesrick Williams off Paul for 19, upper-cutting a short, rising ball and fielder takes the catch, but quickly realises before going over the boundary rope, so tosses it back into the field of play and takes it just as he comes back in (43-4, 5.3 overs).

Mushfiqur Rahim was caught at third man by Rovman Powell off Kesrick Williams, upper-cutting (90-5, 9.3 overs).

Ariful Haque was bowled by Russell for 15, playing back and across (6-116, 14.1 overs).

Mahmudullah was bowled by Williams for 35, deceived and playing across a slower ball (7-125, 16.1 overs).

Mehidy Hasan was caught at deep mid-wicket by Ashley Nurse off Williams for 11, playing a slog/sweep (132-8, 18.1 overs).

Nazmul Islam was caught behind by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin off Williams for seven, driving loosely (137-9, 18.3 overs).

The not out batsmen were Rubel Hossain on two and Mustafizur Rahman on three.
