PORT-OF-SPAIN: The Windward Islands made an excellent start to the 2018 WINDIES UNDER 17 CHAMPIONSHIP when they defeated a highly fancied Guyana by 59 runs at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Couva.
The Windwards batted first on a good batting strip with the ball coming on and scored 284 for eight off their 50 overs. Garvin Serieux was the star of the show and cracked the first century of the 2018 tournament. He scored a brilliant 122 to lead the effort after Windwards lost their first wicket without a run on the board. Serieux and Teddy Bishop who made 91, added 204 runs for the fourth wicket, before Serieux left for 122. He batted for 144 minutes, faced 130 balls and struck 15 fours and one six. Bishop who looked very fluent during his innings fell nine short of a century. He was at the crease for 136 minutes, faced 115 balls, ten of which he sent to the fence. Apart from these two Lee Solomon made 31. There were two wickets apiece from Silvan Williams and Sheldon Charles.
When Guyana batted they got an opening partnership off 88 from Navindra Persaud and Sachin Singh. This was the perfect platform to launch after the huge score but it was not to be. Singh fell for 52 off 60 balls with seven fours and a six, and Persaud made 35 off 85 balls with three fours.
When both left, number three batsman Seon Glasgow struck 51 but the others failed to come to the part and Guyana folded for 225 in 47.5 overs. Glasgow faced just 40 balls for his half century, hitting three fours and two sixes. Dominic Auguste and Ackeem Auguste were the chief destroyers with both men taking four wickets each.
At the NCC: Windward Is 284/ 8 (50) (Garvin Serieux 122, Teddy Bishop 91, Lee Solomon 31, Silvan Williams 2/43, Sheldon Charles 2/32) vs Guyana 225 all out (47.5) (Sachin Singh 52, Seon Glasgow 51, Navindra Persaud 35, Ackeem Auguste 4/50, Dominic Auguste 4/42) – Windwards won by 59 runs.
