SOUTHAMPTON, England, CMC – West Indies stars Stafanie Taylor and Hayley Matthews both failed but Matthews came away with honours as Southern Vipers beat Western Storm by nine wickets in the opening game of the Women’s Super League here Thursday.
Sent in at the Rose Bowl, Storm were bundled out cheaply for 70 off 18.5 overs with Georgia Hennessy top-scoring with 22 off 31 balls.
With Hennessy and Taylor, who made eight, involved in a third wicket stand of 28, Stormed reached 41 for two after losing two early wickets.
Once Hennessy fell in the 10th over, however, Storm lost their last eight wickets for 29 runs.
Seamer Suzie Bates (2-8) and left-arm pacer Tash Farrant (2-10) claimed two wickets apiece.
In reply, Bates struck an unbeaten 47 off 31 deliveries as Vipers marched to their modest target off nine overs.
She put on 55 off 34 deliveries for the first wicket with teenager Matthews who made 15 off 18 deliveries with three fours before falling to the off-spin of her West Indies captain.
